Andy Baggarly is the man of the hour

as his blog once again scoops the world with the announcement of Espineli’s demotion and Matt Palmer’s promotion. I don’t get the move. The only way this makes sense is if Palmer makes a spot start for Lincecum. If that’s the case, why not wait a couple of days?

Who He Is

Matt Palmer was selected by the Giants in the 31st round of the 2002 draft (aka the Matt Cain/Fred Lewis draft). This is his sixth year in the minors. He has never made an appearance in the majors before. I can’t find the scouting report on him, but I remember it written that he throws a fastball in the mid 90s. He does get hit a lot, which leads me to believe that his fastball may not have much movement to it (if the reports of mid 90s velocity are to be believed). I’m glad that Matt will get a taste of the show– not many 31st rounders make it to the majors– but chalk me up to someone who doesn’t understand why he was called up.
