Notes

RHP Justin Hedrick

Hedrick was drafted in the 6th round of the 2004 draft out of Northeastern University. He throws a FB from 89-92 with a good slider. This is second year in AA, and he has improved on his peripherals, raising his K/9 to 10.50 and lowering his BB/9 to 2.77. Hedrick is a victim of the Giants’ bullpen depth. If he was in a system thinner on pitchers, he would be playing in AAA or riding the option train. As it is relief pitchers are notoriously inconsistent from year to year, so it’s always good to have an extra arm stashed in the minors. It is likely that Justin will finish the year in AA splitting closing duties with Kelvin Pichardo and solidifying Connecticut’s stretch run.

I just can’t believe Hedrick shouldn’t be a Fresno over some of AAA FAs we signed and who are not performing

This is probably true. In my mind, there are two possible reasons why he is in Connecticut. 1. The Giants are hoping that he will not get picked as a rule 5 draftee. Stashing him in Connecticut will lower his value and take him off of some radars. 2. Connecticut is woefully bereft of prospects, so having Hedrick there is a bone thrown in that direction. (Not much of a bone though.)

Secret reason 3 is the Giants management don’t think Hedrick is that good. I don’t believe in this reason, but it’s there.
Secret reason 4 is the Giants management is incompetent. I don’t much believe in this either, at least when it comes to pitcher management.
