Project Prospect Midseason Top 50

Project Prospect has posted its Midseason Top 50 Prospect list, and it features Madison Bumgarner at #14, Tim Alderson at #20, and Angel Villalona at #46. Three prospects in a top 50 list is certainly a welcome sign after years of farm system mediocrity. I’ve always been very high on Bumgarner, but I think Alderson is an over-rank here. I like Angel at #46. If Buster Posey had signed, he would most assuredly be in the top 50, my guess in mid to low 20s. How do you like the list? How do you think it compares to Rotoworld’s Top 150?

Alderson MIGHT be an over reach but, having seen him pitch, I’m not so sure – he misses a lot of bats and seems to be able to get a ground ball when he needs it.

Also, the comments on Big V that they make are somewhat specious; the kid’s only 17 and has not played any organized ball before last year. He’s a stud and I still think he’ll end up at 3rd.

Alderson is doing very well in San Jose, but I want to see if he can miss those bats in AA. I’m also worried that he doesn’t have a plus plus pitch. How many major league aces can you name who don’t have a mid 90s fastball or a true out pitch like Webb’s sinker? That makes me think that his ceiling might be a #3 starter, which frankly doesn’t excite me that much. His age, does mean that he might develop that pitch in the future, and his polish seems makes him a very safe prospect. So in conclusion, my attitude is wait and see.

I’m going to have to disagree with you about Big V. Unless he goes on a drastic conditioning program, I just don’t see him playing third. Brings to mind Pablo, who was also moved off of third at a young age because of weight issues.
