- Rotoworld has put out its top 150 midseason prospect list. Bumgarner is at #21, Alderson at #33, Villalona at #41, Sosa at #66, and Schierholtz at #126. Buster Posey would have ranked at #32 should he have signed.
- Some transactions of Olympic note. Chris Begg was released and will be playing for Team Canada along with Brooks McNiven. Since Geno was called up to San Francisco, he will not be playing for the US Olympic team.
- Billy Byler of the Augusta Chronicle has an interesting article on one of the best parts of minor league baseball– the promotions. The Greenjackets will have a Brett Favre promotion next week where “the team will retire Favre’s number, then reinstate it the next night and flip-flops will be given away at the gate.” Since I grew up an avid fan of the Niners and 1960s TV lingo, Brett can go suck an egg.
- There is a nice article in the Statesmen Journal on the recent successes of this blog’s favorite underdog Mike “Lorax” Loree. Mike throws in the mid-80s with good control. He also has a slider and a changeup. The article brought up the inevitable Maddux comp. Even though I’m rooting for the Lorax, I have serious doubts about how his stuff will hold up in AA. His ceiling might be a future reliever ala Sergio Romo.
- As you no doubt have noticed, I’ve changed the layout of the site somewhat. Unfortunately this theme does not allow me to change the color scheme so the blue will have to remain– at least it will remain until I get less code stupid and figure out how to customize the scheme. Also since I am not at all artistically inclined, if anyone will be willing to make a banner or knows someone who does, I will greatly appreciate it. I’ve also added the minor transactions page and the prospect list page in an effort to make the navigation more user friendly. The tags are a good way to find information on a player, but I’ve found that the search function works better. I’ve also added two more links on the right. Phuture Phillies is a minor league blog about the, well, Phillies minor league system and Future Redbirds is about the Cardinals’ system.
- And last but not least, the official Minor League Baseball site has a poll on the right sidebar that whimsically asks you to vote for the best mustache in the Minor Leagues. The options feature three of our very own Giants prospects, all of whom are in Connecticut which makes me question how much work actually went into researching minor mustaches. But my reactions: Justin Hedrick looks like he should not live within 20 miles of any elementary school and Adam Witter looks like he can fill in for next diabetes shoot should Wilford Brimley finally call it quits. Sergio Romo’s is quite ordinary. Sort of a pizza delivery air about it. Naturally I voted for Justin. Agree/Disagree?
