Prospect Watch 7/8/08

Fresno defeated Fresno 10-6.

LF Dave Roberts: 3 for 3, 2B, 3B, HR, BB
Dave’s second rehab start is a great one as he falls a single short of a cycle. I like Dave as a player, but his presence doesn’t make much sense on the Giants’ roster. He’s either a fourth outfielder/pinch runner on a contending team or a starter on a team that lacks depth in the outfield. The Giants are neither.

RF Nate Schierholtz: 1 for 4, 2B, 2 K (293/342/533)

1B Travis Ishikawa: 1 for 3, 2B, BB (298/369/632, 57 AB)
Of Ishikawa’s 17 hits, 12 have fallen for extra bases. On top of that, he is doing this against both lefties and righties.

C Steve Holm: 2 for 3, 2B (300/333/400, 10 AB)

Connecticut split its doubleheader with Binghamton, winning the first game 4-1, and losing the second 1-0.

C-1B Pablo Sandoval (combined): 3 for 6, 2 2B, HR (286/322/482, 56 AB)
It’s still early, but I’ve been very impressed by Pablo’s performance.

LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 1 for 2 (315/399/408)

3B Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 3, 2B (283/333/415, 53 AB)

SP Ben Snyder: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 K (5.56 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 14.1 IP)
Ben finally has a good start in AA. With his fringy velocity, Ben will have to find a way to enhance his control. Heart and moxie count for a lot, but it won’t make your 85mph fastball any more deceptive.

RP Kelvin Pichardo: 1 IP, 2 K (5.58 H/9, 4.02 BB/9, 8.03 K/9)
Kelvin Pichardo was acquired in the trade that sent Michael Tucker to the Phillies. He throws a live fastball in the mid-90s with a good slider and changeup. He has been described by coaches and scouts as both having a “closer’s mentality” and being “cocky and immature”. Attitude issues aside, The only thing that was holding him back is control. Recent appearances, however, indicate that Kelvin may have turned a corner, as he has struck out seventeen batters and walked only three in his last fourteen innings. If his improvement is real, then you can expect him to be called up as early as September this year. He will turn 23 in October.

Jason Waddell: 2 IP 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K (6.80 H/9, 5.36 BB/9, 10.30 K/9)
Jason is a lefty who was drafted out of Riverside City College in the 2001 draft. He’s spent his last couple of years bouncing between San Jose and Connecticut, striking a lot of batters but giving up too many hits. This season he is doing much better. You might see him in Fresno by the end of the year. He is twenty-seven years old.

San Jose lost to Visalia 6-3.

1B Brett Pill: 3 for 4, 2 2B (242/290/376)
Brett was drafted in the 7th round of the 2006 draft out of Cal State Fullerton. He has a good swing and hits a good number of doubles, but has yet to put up a good batting average in the minors.

C Jackson Williams: 1 for 4, 3 K (303/378/333, 33 AB)
Silly Jackson. You’re not supposed to swing at those.

RF Dan Ortmeier: 0 for 2, 2 BB, K (167/444/167, 6 AB)
This was Dan’s second rehab start in San Jose.

SP Kevin Pucetas: 6 IP, 1 H, 9 K (7.66 H/9, 1.94 BB/9, 7.44 K/9)
Kevin was at his most spectacular today.

Augusta lost to Lakewood 6-4.

2B Nick Noonan: 1 for 4, 2B, K (300/328/446)

1B Angel Villalona: 1 for 4 (239/294/407)

OF Tayler Creswell: 1 for 2, BB, K
This is Tayler’s second game after his promotion from Salem-Keizer and he continues to do well. He’s on my list of toolsy players to watch.

Salem-Keizer had the day off. Some prospects I’m watching:

C Michael Ambort: 268/348/585, 41 AB
OF Jeremiah Luster:182/315/227, 44 AB
OF Francisco Peguero: 143/200/143, 14 AB

SP Wilber Bucardo: 3.18 ERA, 1.32 WHIP
SP Mike Loree: 1.23 ERA, 0.36 WHIP
RP Edwin Quirarte: 2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP
RP Kelvin Marte: 4.26 ERA, 1.42 WHIP

The Giants lost to the Royals 8-5.

CF Wendell Fairley: 1 for 5, K (212/283/250, 52 AB)

LF Ben Woodbury: 3 for 5, 2B (500/588/571, 14 AB)
Ben was signed as an undrafted free agent from Missouri State where he played with Ryan Mantle.

RP Nathan Pendley: 2.1 IP, 2 K (3.12 ERA, 1.50 GO/AO, 8.2 WHIP)
Nathan was drafted in the 19th round of the 2004 draft. This is his 4th rehab appearance. He played at San Jose last year.
